Where do I start?

In the past, the unspoken covenant between employer and employee basically assured continued employment in exchange for performance and loyalty. The employer looked after the careers of its employees and promoted hardworking and loyal employees. Career success implied upward mobility on the career ladder to a job with more authority and responsibility. In terms of the reward philosophy, pay scales were linked to the hierarchy of the job and the only way to earn a better package was to assume a managerial position.

In the modern world, employers cannot guarantee lifetime employment to their employees due to the turbulent, changing and competitive environment they now operate in which requires them to constantly adapt to environmental changes. This has resulted in the emerging of the ‘protean career’ where employees are responsible for managing their own careers through commitment to lifelong learning to update their skills and remain employable.

Managing your career is an ongoing process in which the individuals gather relevant information about themselves in the working environment, develop realistic career goals based on the information and implement appropriate career plans to achieve these goals. We at RDC believe that it is a joint effort between the employer as an enabler and the employee who takes the responsibility to own and drive their career.

RDC will therefore provide employees with the tools and resources to navigate their careers that give them personal fulfilment, thereby enabling them to experience RDC as an employer of choice.

Roles and responsibilities

Though career management is firmly the responsibility of the individual to manage throughout their working life, RDC’s responsibility is to assist its staff in managing their careers within the context of RDC and clients.

RDC understands that whilst individuals are contracted to the company, it is the company’s responsibility to offer the guidance and necessary assistance to enable employees to make informed career decisions and facilitate their progress towards these. The points below highlight some of the company responsibilities:

Ensure that when business allows it, resources are made available for training

Forecast skills requirements in the market

Conduct performance reviews to determine current skills availability and level within the company

Communicate business mission, vision and strategies

Provide training for graduates that show interest and aptitude towards a career in ICT
